wedding season

Been super busy recently, not just with cakes. I've been upgrading my website creating a new logo, registered to do to wedding fairs this September and October. I'm especially excited about those. Up to now I've only done wedding cakes in a small way, but I thought I'd turn my hand and create some simple stylish and contemporary wedding cakes. So the cake dummies have been bought, as have the wedding magazines (purely for research purposes!). It's quite different doing a wedding cake to any other, in most cases a wedding cake is the biggest and most expensive a cake that anyone will ever buy. That's why it has to be perfect in every way. Granted everyone's taste and styles are different but each bride want the same thing, perfection! As a cake maker I try to achieve this with all the cakes I make, there have been times when I've not been happy with a cake and had to start from scratch. But I'd rather be happy with what I've made than worry that I've not made any profit! (I might not be very good at business for this reason!)
But I must say that despite all the cakes I've made wedding cakes and carved cakes are my favourite to make.
My first wedding fair is local in Adlington at "The Willows" situated at the Douglas Valley golf club. A very picturesque venue.
It's been ages since I attended any wedding fairs (7years since I was married) so I think I need to do some homework! I will be trawling the wedding fairs at the start of September with lots of hopeful brides. I wonder how many chocolate fountains I can spot?
In the mean time I'm hoping to do a few more cake courses to hone my skills and keep up to date with new techniques, I suppose ill have to find some time to sleep as well :) ah well no rest for the wicked!

wedding fever

I've decided to take the plunge and start doing wedding fairs!! So let's get those dummies decorated!! 1 down 3 or 4 more to do before September. It's quite a daunting task being pitted up against other local cake makes. Each hoping that there wears will entice potential customers to them over there competitors. I've now started to scour wedding articles and trends to see what in vogue for this autumn and next year. Also there is the decision of presentation, do I go for clean an crisp or shabby chic? Oh the decisions!
The current trend is for all these bright colour and contrasting colour like green and purple?? Not sure how many of Bolton's potential brides are going for these very bold and none traditional colours on there wedding cakes? Do I take a risk or do I stick with more traditional colours and styles? Might have to do a Facebook poll to see what people really think and want.
Also I've put my name down for an ABC accredited course in sugarcraft. Hoping to hone my royal icing techniques. Most people prefer icing/ fondant covered cakes to the traditional Royal Iced cakes. As a consequence I don't get to practice this side of cake decoration that much. I really hope I can get on this highly sort after course. I should find out at the end of August. (Fingers crossed)
I've finally designed a unique and specific logo that I've now sent off to a lovely little company to help bring my ideas to fruition. Ooh I can't wait to see the final product. :)
Ah well best get back to doing some real work and begin my referring between my 2 delightful children (lol!)

Busy Easter

Well, I have been very busy here at Daisy Hill Cakes Bolton. Expanding my portfolio and client base! I did a super cute 'Westie' dog cake. It was almost to scale!! (See http://daisyhillcakesbolton.webs.com/apps/photos )
While doing all these lovely cakes we are having some major building work done so things are very hectic, stuff has been moved, put away and hidden. It's proving to be quite a challenge, add The Easter holidays into the mix and I think I'm one step away from a nervous breakdown!! All I can say is thank god I find cake decorating quite therapeutic ;).
This year is looking like its going to be quite busy and the last batch of orders is showing the 'Giants' are making a reappearance, 'giant cupcakes' that is. The last 4 orders I have had are all giant cupcakes. I think they must go through cake trends?
Ah well must return to the grind stone, I have to prepare for an Ark cake next week, so the animals were made in 2 by 2's hurrah....:)

best bake forward

Well I have been rushed off my feet recently with lots of cakes (which is good, I mustn’t complain!).
I’ve had a rush on men’s and boys’ cakes over the last few weeks, very odd as most of my cakes up to now have all been for girls / women!
Any way I’ve had 2 orders for treasure chest cakes (they must be in vogue at the moment!) a Liverpool FC cake and a little boys christening cake based on the very talented Italian cake maker/ designer Antoniella Di Maria’s design, not something I would usually do, but I like to try new things!
I have also had a request for a classic motorbike cake, which I’m really looking forward to. It should be a challenge trying to get cake to look like metal!! II have started to research the cake and there are so many styles in which this type of cake can be done, however the method I’m going for is an 11’ carved cake on a scenic cake board. I should have a chance to play with my air brush tools too :-)
As you may or may not know this year I’m trying to build my business so have teamed up with a few different companies (Pharaohs play centre in Adlington and Finesse Photography in Bolton). Now I’ve found a lovely little local business that’s just starting up, which is producing favours ‘bombonieres’ for weddings, christenings and other events. So hopefully so we will be able to offer a very special wedding and christening package that will obviously include your cake but also for favours very soon.
I have also been advertising the local press! Check me out I’m in the newspaperJ. Things are going great. I am also down for doing a few local fetes this summer (the 1St one is in Westhoughton’s Central Park on 15/6/13). We will be selling cupcakes and cake pops/balls this year.
Well best get back to some baking

I'm Back!

I'm back!! After quite a while of not being here (2 small children were taking my time up + making lots of cakes and cupcakes).
Where to begin? Well in the last 12 months I've strengthened Daisy Hill Cakes Bolton by teaming up with two more fabulous local business. I now provide Birthday cakes for Pharaohs play centre in Adlington. I also am bringing 'cake smash' to Finesse Photography based in Bolton, it's all very exciting!
I've attended a few more cake decorating classes to hone my skills and enable me to produce better cakes for everyone :)
And last autumn I went to the international cake show at the NEC Birmingham (I was thoroughly blow away and inspired) there were so many brilliant cakes there. The battery on my camera nearly wore out from all the pictures it took, lol.
This year 2013 is looking to be a good year for Daisy Hill Cakes Bolton, I'm hoping we will grow from strength to strength! I'm forward planning and looking at doing some Summer Fetes in our little area of Bolton and possibly doing some autumn wedding shows, so best get some display cakes planned!!
I need to organise an advertising campaign too! Think I will stick to local advertising though. (NO, please do call me and tell me how good you are at promoting my business to southern England, America, Europe or anywhere else for that matter!! I may have received a FEW phone calls from advertising agents recently!!:/ )
I am slowly getting to grips with all this social media stuff and how Google works and how to get ranked higher (thanks to my very frustrated IT advisor!!) and as for tweeting well I can do it although I don't get all this # stuff ;)
My aim is to try and keep up with my Blog as apparently this also helps with my google status? Not to mention it lets all those lovely people out there know how I'm doing :)
So hope it won't be another 12 months!! Bye bye for now

cute chick

Easter is fast approaching and it time to make masses of yellow fondant chicks and white bunnys, there's nothing quite as synonymous as these little critters and Easter.
Also you have to make the cake either lush lemon or deeply indulgeant chocolate, or as a traditional option there's simmnal cake.
I'm thinking outside the box a bit this year I might do a few spring lambs as a little something different
As for frosting, my favourite for Easter has to be the chocolate whip
200g icing sugar
100g butter (soft)
2 tbsp chocolate spread
2 tbsp mallow fluff
And a splash of milk

Another alternative cake decoration for this time of year is Flowes. So what do you preferre? Mature classic flowers, or cute and kidsy? ;-)
